High Tatras - Ascent to Cols

A col ("sedlo" in Slovak) requires, apart from appropriate equipment, significant physical ability and experience in rocky terrain. Even if the trails are marked, in places they are not maintained paths but lead through loose scree rock, moraines or steep rock. The more demanding sections are secured by climbing chains. Tours and and climbs off of marked trails are allowed only in the presence of a certified mountain guide.

Ascent to cols Cols in the Tatras can be divided into two groups:
the first accessible from one side only with return possible only the same way; and the second consisting of passes between two valleys.

Cols with only one access

  • Tomanovske, Suche, Laliove, Hladke -- these lie on the Tatras' main ridge, describing the international border, and passing through these is prohibited by law.
  • Vaha, Lomnicke sedlo, Kolove sedlo -- these are situated opposite steep and dangerous terrain, and therefore are marked as accessible from one side only

    Passes

  • Zavory -- simple ascent and descent from both sides
  • Vysne Koprovske sedlo -- simple ascent and descent from both sides
  • Bystre sedlo -- the correct direction for ascent is via Mlynicka dolina, descent via Furkotska dolina. Don't be tempted to make your ascent easier by using the aerial tramway to Solisko; save it for your descent.
  • Sedlo pod Ostrvou --ascent is recommended from Popradske pleso
  • Polsky hreben -- ascent is recommended from the north side; the south side is secured with chains
  • Prielom -- because of certain difficulties, ascent is recommended from the Velka studena dolina
  • Priecne sedlo -- ascent is permitted only via the Mala studena dolina, descent through the Velka studena dolina, never in reverse. Think not only of your own safety but the safety of others as well. Two-way traffic on chains is extremely dangerous.
  • Sedielko -- because of loose rock, ascent is recommended from the Mala studena dolina, descent via Javorova dolina
  • Kopske sedlo -- simple ascent and descent from both sides
  • Sedlo pod Svistovkou -- ascent is recommended from the north side
