Tatras' Mountain Rescue Service
People visit the Tatras to relax, exercise and experience the mountains
-- but things often turn out less pleasantly.
Every year we handle climbers' and hikers' accidents and injuries.
Many try to blame the mountains themselves, which only damages the Tatras' reputation.
In fairness, though, almost every accident is the fault of people.
Tourists must take into account the demands of a mountain environment,
and alter their behaviour accordingly.
In the interest of assisting those without abundant experience,
the Mountain Rescue Service has prepared a few directions for hikers:
Accidents and injuries in the mountains are, in our experience, caused above all by the following:
inexperience with specific terrain - on unfamiliar ground rely on a map, and always keep to marked trails
over-estimation of one's strength - on tours, accustom yourself gradually: start with easier routes and in time attempt the more difficult
insufficient equipment - in more demanding mountain terrain equip yourself appropriately (see separate section on equipment)
attempting tours in bad weather - rain makes rocky ground very slippery, fog impairs orientation, snow or storms drain strength -- so don't expose yourself to bad weather. In high terrain its effects are powerful.
