TATRAS' MOUNTAIN RESCUE SERVICE
|
Horska zachranna sluzba
This service was established in the High Tatras in 1950.
At this time, ever-increasing tourism was resulting in more accidents
than the service's forerunners (a volunteer corps, for example) could manage.
The Tatras' Mountain Rescue Service was charged not only with high-mountain rescue,
but also with accident prevention.
Today, the Service's activity has expanded, and now,
with its 21 workers and the help of volunteers, it is responsible for:
nonstop day and night service at the Mountain Rescue Service headquarters in Stary Smokovec
rescue of those injured while hiking or climbing
information service for visitors to the Tatras
patrols throughout TANAP
marking of hiking trails, and maintenance of informative signs
ascents to cols and summits in impassable terrain, by means of chains and artificial footholds
placement of summit books and their receptacles
in winter, nonstop service in ski areas
snow measurement and prediction of avalanche conditions
services during mass ascents and all other large-scale activities
lecturing for courses, tour groups and recreational purposes
in winter, special trail marking
high-terrain campsites
maintenance of rescue stations throughout the mountains
